March 2016 Tournament of The Month: Poppy Jasper Cup and Skills Competition
The Poppy Jasper Cup and Skills Competition was developed to aid Cal North teams to prepare for Spring Competition and is the March 2016 Tournament of the Month.
In 2012 Cal North sanctioned this new tournament to be held at the Morgan Hill Outdoor Sports Center, and to be run by the Morgan Hill Youth Sports Alliance (MHYSA). From modest beginnings, the tournament has grown from 32 teams to well over 100, and has been sold out the last three years. The tournament is designed for Boys & Girls from U8 to U16 with the goal of providing coaches and players a final “dress rehearsal” before the Spring CCSL season.
The tournament is set up to be a serious event in a big time environment, but with plenty to do and side attractions to celebrate the beautiful game. A major distinguishing factor of the tournament is its low cost with all the frills (great refs, full trophies and medals, etc), and as always the ever popular Skills Competition, where individual skills are challenged and honored with trophies and medals. Every registered player on an accepted team is automatically registered to the Skills Competition, although no one is required to participate. Awards are provided for achievements in individual skills as well as the overall skill set for goal keepers, fields skills, and scoring talents.
The tournament’s objective is to get teams (from CCSL and other playing leagues) into a big time tournament environment to help coaches evaluate their players and make final adjustments to prepare for the season. Professional photographers and videographers will be onsite, should coaches or parents need a record or memento of the tournament.
The two day tournament is coupled with local sports team appearances, the popular Skills Competition, as well as carnival rides, dances, shows, and more to make it a fun celebration of the beautiful game. There will be custom T-shirts, Earthquake tickets, other raffle prizes, goodies, and lots to do. MHYSA has pledged to continue bringing more fun every year!
There will be great vendors like Soccer Loco for Soccer Equipment, Java2You for the best coffee in town, El Burrito Crazy for their famous Mexican dishes, Slushies, delicious churros, great ice cream and gourmet yogurt, and MHYSA’s own Champions Bistro will be serving BBQ, hot dogs, sandwiches and pizza. Also onsite check out soccer Jewelry, Italian Licorice, rides and jump houses, and hot air balloon take offs (weather permitting).
