2018 Soccer Expo Educational Workshops Schedule

The Cal North Soccer Expo is back in the Bay Area this January 27 at the Oakland Marriott City Center with a whole new set of workshops!

Cal North is the only organization in California to host this annual event and best of all it is 100% open and free to the public.

Here are a just a few of the very talented speakers and workshop presenters ready to meet you face to face!

Dave Chesler, Former U.S. Soccer Women’s National Team Performance Analysis Coach

As the Former Performance Analysis Coach, Dave was responsible for connecting and integrating team performance analysis and opponent scouting, using video as well as player performance data from matches and training. He joined the Women’s National Team head Coach Jill Ellis in January of 2016, after serving the U.S. Soccer Director of Coaching Coaching Development from January of 2011 through January of 2016. Dave holds a U.S. Soccer “A” Coaching License, a U.S. Soccer Academy Director License, and has been a U.S. Soccer National Staff Instructor since 1992, helping teach courses and evolve the content at the National Coaching Schools for all license levels.

Dave Chesler will be presenting Touchline Analysis – Individual and Team Performance: A dialogue about observing and measuring game performance from the technical area at 11am and Theory into Practice – How do we get better? Translating game performance into a training plan to advance team and individual development at 3pm.

Santo Rivas, U.S. Soccer Coach Educator (Cal North)

Santo is an exceptionally talented educator that has worked in southern and northern California. He is currently a US Soccer Coach Educator for Cal North, and has been a National Staff Instructor since 2013. Don’t miss Santo’s sessions on Understanding the New Grassroots Coaching Education Pathway for Administrators (10am) and for Coaches (2pm).

Bret Simon, Former Stanford University Soccer Coach

Bret has coached soccer in college for 32 years at Stanford University, Creighton University and Berry College. He has been a national staff instructor for the United States Soccer Federation and is presently a staff coach for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
He has been named NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year. Received multiple Conference Coach of the Year Awards and coached numerous players who have gone on to play at the professional and international levels.

He will be hosting two sessions in collaboration with Positive Coaching Alliance: (1) Double-Goal Coach: Culture, Practices and Games at 10am and (2) Mastery: Coaching for Peak Performance at 2pm.

Sandy Castillo, JUSA TOP Dogs – Co-founder and Coach, Cal South – TOPSoccer Committee Chairwoman

Sandy’s coaching career spans over two decades, with her first introduction to TOPSoccer in 1990. She is the Co-founder of the Junior United Soccer Association TOPSoccer program, and in 2002 was appointed the TOPSoccer Committee Chairman for Cal South. She started TOPSoccer festivals to promote TOPSoccer throughout Cal South. Under her leadership she helped grow TOPSoccer from from 2 festivals to 28. She is also a member of Cal South’s Hall of Fame (2006), and appointed Western Regional TOPSoccer Chairperson in 2009. She is an authority on TOPSoccer and Co-Authored the Continuing Education course for the Western Region.

She will be presenting her TOPSoccer workshops How to Start A TOPSoccer Program Part A at 10am and Part B at 11am, as well as A Day, in a life of TOPSoccer: “Sensory Processing” at 2pm.

Benjamin Ormsby, 2005 Girls State ODP Coach

Benjamin has been a coach for Elk Grove Soccer since 2007, and has coached both boys and girls of all ages. Benjamin has taken USSF coaching education courses every year for the last 4 years, and currently has a USSF B, has completed the brand new USSF Senior A License, and has an NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma. He attended California State University Sacramento, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. He was the U4-U8 Director of Coaching for FC Elk Grove from 2014 – 2016 and an assistant coach for the Cosumnes River College Men’s team in the fall of 2016. He coached the 2001 aged girls team in the Cal North Olympic Development Program in the 2016 – 2017 season.

Benjamin will be presenting his coaching session on “Combination play in Attacking 3rd to create scoring chances” at 2pm.

Carlos Juarez, Cal North Technical Director

Carlos brings over 20 years of experience int he soccer world to Cal North and it’s members. As a US Soccer National Instructor; Former US Men’s National Team Chief Scout; Former Professional Coach in the MLS and WUSA; 18 years of Collegiate Coaching experience; and a Youth Club Technical Director for 20 years, Carlos has seen the entire spectrum of what the sport has to offer.

Carlos will be conducting two coachings sessions: (1) Advancing the Ball when the time is right at beginning at 1pm, and (2) Defending Early at 3pm.

Ramiro  Rodriguez, ODP Coach and Coaching Instructor

Great teaching and coaching occurs when a student athlete with desire is met with skillful coaching in a fun and competitive environment, allowing both to grow. I believe the relationship with our athletes is critical for our success as educators. – Ramiro Rodriguez

Ramiro has been involved in soccer for over 20 years. His experience as a player and a coach at the youth and national level gives him a full perspective on the development of the sport. Ramiro will be  holding his coaching session Passing and Receiving at 11am.
