Cal North Team Has Their Eye on National Championship in Frisco, Texas
Santa Clara Sporting 00 Green, under the leadership of Coach John Azevedo and guidance of team manager Teresa Azevedo, advanced to the Region IV Championships after going undefeated in Cal North State Cup competition and claiming the Cal North State Cup title on May 7th.
The team’s 2017 return to Far West Regionals gave the Sporting squad the opportunity to defend their 2016 Region IV championship. After posting a 2-0-1 record in group play Santa Clara moved on to quarterfinals, where it claimed a 5-1 victory over Colorado’s Club America Gladiadores 00. In the semifinals, a 1-0 victory over FC Portland 00 Navy from Oregon landed the Cal North team in the championship game where they prevailed in a hard fought 2-1 nail-biter over Seattle United Copa.
The return trip to Frisco Texas will pit the Sporting boys against the National League representative, McClean 00 Green from Virginia on Tuesday, the Region III Champion Michigan Jaguars 00 Green on Wednesday and in their final preliminary round game on Thursday, they will face another representative from US Youth Soccer National League, Cal South’s West Coast FC Armour 2000. Thursday’s game is scheduled to be live-streamed by US Youth Soccer while Cal North will live-stream the Tuesday and Wednesday matches on Facebook. The top two teams in each bracket will advance to semifinals on Saturday morning at 9 AM with winners of the semifinals playing for the Don Greer Cup and the title of National Championship at 10 AM Sunday.
The Santa Clara Sporting 00B Green roster is comprised of the following players: Forwards Angel Avalos Guzman, Javier De Los Santos, Luis Flores and David Hernandez; Midfielders Jamal Adam, Abel Flores, Jay Houston, Ramon Inda Felix, Rudolfo Pedroza, Alan Ramirez, Joshua Robertson, Alvaro Rocha, Lucas Tager and Marco Torres; Defenders Harrison Kepp, Andrew Lirios-Ramos, Maciel Fernando and Ramses Sandi with Goalkeepers Andy Gomez and Willem Kelson anchoring the squad.
