Not All Superheros Wear Capes
This past December Cal North had its first all female referee crew on the Under 19 girl’s District Cup Final.
The Referee Crew was composed of four talented officials starting with Center Referee Karen Teague, Assistant Referee 1 Brittany Mullins, Assistant Referee 2 Carly Greutert and Fourth Official Catherine Olguin.
The final match was between Roseville Rush and NHA (Antelope-Area) Red Hawks. At the end of regulation play both teams were equal in goals 0-0. From Kicks from the mark The Red Hawks prevailed and won the District Cup Final.
When asked about the match Karen Teague said, “Both teams came to play. They demonstrated fitness and skill while still employing the game’s altruistic fair play with each battle for the ball. The coaches and fans were engaged at the best level a referee crew could ever hope for–intense and passionate while being respectful (from the starting whistle to the fifth, cliff-hanging, nail biting, game clenching kick from the mark to the gathering of teams at the awards ceremony).”
Christina Unkel, a FIFA Referee since 2013, said, “The importance of having a female official is just the importance of recognizing, like anything in life, there should be diverse individuals refereeing these matches.” While referees don’t do this for the recognition this is a special occasion. For the first time there has been an all female crew on a district cup match and the first in the history of all finals in Northern California. Being a referee is not easy at all, but referees try to learn effective communication between themselves and players as well as team officials. Referees learn how to manage people, make decisions while under pressure all while remaining calm.
When asked about what advice they give to officials who think of giving up the referee crew responded the following: “The game needs referees like you–because you love the game”, “No referee is perfect, however all can strive for perfection”, “It takes a long time to learn to be confident and develop one’s own way of running a game, so keep with it unless it is not fun for you anymore.”
Referees may not have a cape to wear but you are the superheroes for the beautiful game!
Congratulations to our four officials!
Center Referee Karen Teague, Assistant Referee 1 Brittany Mullins, Assistant Referee 2 Carly Greutert and Fourth Official Catherine Olguin want to thank D6 Assignor Chuck Pirone for the immense honor and show of confidence handpicking our referee crew for this momentous occasion!
