Remembering Cal North Founding Member John Whittock

STOCKTON — Founding member of California Youth Soccer Association (Cal North) John Whittock, 82, died on Oct. 13 after he was struck by an SUV while riding his bike on West Monterey Avenue.

The Cal North Hall of Fame inductee, and youth soccer coach of more than 25 years, was on his daily bike ride to visit his daughter, according to his son Mark. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead due to severe head trauma.

Along with his work in the development of the California Youth Soccer Association, the British-born Whittock was also a longtime tennis coach at Edison and Stagg high schools in Stockton. He was known by all for his relentless behind-the-scenes giving, and dismissal of praise. And is acknowledged as the architect of the TOP Soccer program for children with disabilities.

The lifetime giver, and lover of soccer, will be sorely missed by the California youth soccer community.
