April 28th marks the beginning of the beach soccer season in Northern California.  But, this year the Spring Challenge at Ocean Beach in San Francisco is producing a little bit of a different twist than in years past.  The one-day event, by Pro-Am Beach Soccer, is now a chance for teams to sharpen their technique and tactics before possibly facing the competition in the Santa Cruz Qualifier for the US Beach Soccer National Championship.

This year at the United Soccer Coaches Convention in Philadelphia, USYSA, sponsored the first ever educational session for beach soccer.  The session was run by longtime Cal North native Tighe O’Sullivan who owns and operates Pro-Am Beach Soccer.  It is USYSA’s vision that beach soccer is a great opportunity for coaches to improve their players SAQ’s as well as many other aspects of the game which are transferable back to the grass.  This session attended by many state executive board members pushed to create the US Beach Soccer National Championship (USBSNC).

The Spring Challenge, on April 28th, will be played at Ocean Beach in San Francisco.  It’s always been a great event.  This Spring Challenge will give teams the chance to have a great time, but they will also see how they are stack up against the competition using it as a warm-up for the 2 day, 14th Annual, Santa Cruz Open on June 9th & 10th, 2018.

The Santa Cruz Open Qualifier which is the oldest operating beach soccer tournament in Northern California has always been an industry leading event nationally.  The competition has helped create many players who have gone onto great success with the US Beach National Team.  Now the event is the stage for one of the eight nationwide qualifiers for the USBSNC which will take place on August 17 -19, 2018.

The US Beach Soccer National Championship is an accumulation of years of beach soccer tournaments leading to local notoriety.  But, now, if you compete in the qualifying age groups which are U13 – U19, and win, you will be invited to play against 7 other teams to be the best in the country.  The destination of the national finals will be announced shortly as the bidding process closed in early March with several cities vying to host.

Not up for qualifying?  Don’t worry, the event will also have recreational divisions and all the traditional age groups from Micro to 12u-19u.   The only difference is the younger and recreational age groups will not be trying to qualify for the USBSNC in August.
